Bad gas at Smithers’ Esso leaves dozens with unexpected vehicle billsOn Thursday, January 9th and Friday January 10th, dozens of people filled their fuel tanks with gasoline at the Esso Station in Smithers that, unbeknownst to them, was contaminated with water. Scott Groves, the Fixed Operations Manager for Coast Mountain GM in Smithers, told CICK News “ the biggest issue with the gasoline engine is going to be performance of the engine and how it runs” [and in the winter] “ probably be seeing some frozen fuel lines”. The cost of flushing the fuel tanks along with the needed tow truck rentals and wasted gas are running up invoices in the hundreds of dollars for many people, like Sarah Payne, a Community Health Worker for Northern Health.
Sarah posted on a Facebook group called Smithers Customer Service Reviews about her experience which resulted in over one hundred comments. ICBC told CICK News that because this damage is due to an after-market product, their coverage will not cover any of the costs, and Esso Head Office as well as the local Esso Station manager have refused to comment on our inquiries.
