Concerns were raised after a recent Globe and Mail article found the province spent $35.6 million dollars for nurses from private agencies between last April and August.

Health Minister Tom Osborne says there will be 219 nursing grads in this province in April and 170 have been offered employment in NL. Osborne was joined by Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services Vice-President of Human Resources Debbie Molloy at a news event yesterday. Concerns were raised after a recent Globe and Mail article found the province spent $35.6 million dollars for nurses from private agencies between last April and August. Osborne says he’s waiting on a report to see if contracts were followed and it’s premature for him to say if something is wrong before talking with the health authority. He says the process has started and they’re waiting for a report. Debbie Molloy is NL Health Services Vice-President of Human Resources. She says a lot of these contracts were entered into during the pandemic when there was an acute shortage of nursing resources. Meanwhile, Molloy says all nursing graduates in this province will be offered a job here. She says they’re working with graduates now who want to work in specific areas.
