Deer Lake Mayor Mike Goosney says he has spoken with Mr. Spoon’s daughters and says “they are finding peace that their dad got to complete his bucket list with a trip to Newfoundland.”
The Mayor of Deer Lake has expressed the town ‘s condolences following the tragic death of an American hunter staying at the Driftwood Inn. The Inn caught fire Saturday morning around 7 a.m. Human remains of 77-year-old Eugene Earl Spoon from Kansas were found in the burned rubble during a search on Wednesday morning. Mayor Mike Goosney says he has spoken with Mr. Spoon’s daughters and says “they are finding peace that their dad got to complete his bucket list with a trip to Newfoundland.” Goosney says he was able to catch a moose through an outfitter while in the area, which will be donated to local foodbanks. He says a card to his neighbours in the United States showed up. Goosney says it was signed off, “Loving my trip here…living the dream, I’m in Gene heaven, love you all.” Goosney says the whole province is there to offer support and will get their loved one back to his family without issue Both the cause of the fire and Spoon’s death are under investigation.
