Now that spring is here, many people have the atv’s out for a bit of backcountry riding. Shawn Street of the Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue group says it’s important to keep safety in mind. He says if you’re heading out for an excursion, always follow the three T’s of wilderness safety with the first being a trip plan, let someone know where you are going and expected time of return. Street says the next thing is to take enough essentials, like water, emergency blankets, snacks, clothing, flashlight, batteries and something to light a fire. He says the final of the three T’s is training, knowing your GPS and skills such as lighting a fire. Street says if someone is expected back at a certain hour and they don’t show up, you can report a missing person. He says there is no need to wait 24 hours.
