As part of a continuing daily series, Bayfm News is featuring the five candidates running in the Long Range Mountains riding with a story each morning this week. Liberal candidate Don Bradshaw had been a journalist on the west coast for NTV News for decades. He says the big issues in this area are tourism and the fishery. Speaking with people over the years about the issues, Bradshaw says the fishery is very important to the economy of this area and more can be done for tourism.
Bradshaw says a lot of positive things happening on the west coast is through the work of former MP, Gudie Hutchings, like Gros Morne National Park with the new visitor centre and road construction, with hundreds of millions spent up there. He says tourism in western NL has so much untapped potential and the fishery is the lifeblood of NL and has been for 500 years since John Cabot arrived on our shores.
Bradshaw says the potential for growth in the riding is huge with mineral exploration. He says one of the last stories he covered as a journalist was about this massive salt mine that will be built in St. George’s starting this year. It has the potential to create 200-300 construction jobs and more during the lifespan. he
Bradshaw says the signs of opportunity are everywhere on the west coast and all that’s needed is to figure out the best way to tap into them. Meanwhile, he says one thing he thought of when entering this race was how this country needs to stand up against Trump’s continuing threat of tarriffs. He says Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, fish harvesters and a plant in the Bay of Islands both deal directly with the US market. Bradshaw says if there isn’t a market, the processor won’t be handling as much fish, plant shifts will be cut, and fish harvesters won’t be able to sell their catch.
