Tony Wakeham, the MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port says people in this province will be hit the hardest since heating oil will also be taxed.
This Saturday, Canadians everywhere will be celebrating the birth of our nation but one NL MHA thinks it will be a day of worry for many people. It’s also the day the Fed’s Clean Fuel Regulations or second carbon tax will come into effect. Tony Wakeham, the MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port says people in this province will be hit the hardest since heating oil will also be taxed. The provincial government will cut its 11-cent carbon tax on gasoline, but it will be replaced by a 14-cent federal tax. Government is repealing legislation and will no longer collect the provincial carbon tax as of July 1st. Wakeham says this new tax will drive the cost of everything higher and will impact people immediately. Wakeham says there’s next to no public transportation in our province and most people have no other choice, but to drive. He says when they get to the grocery store, they will find prices have gone up because of higher costs of fuel for transportation. Wakeham says these regulations weren’t designed for Newfoundlanders. He says the best way to make Canada greener is through technology, not taxation.
