Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre held a news conference yesterday saying total crime is up 50 percent, sexual assaults are up 75 percent, violent firearms offences up by 116% and extortion is up 357 %.

Stats Canada has released new crime numbers for Canada. In some categories, crime has not only doubled or tripled, but certain offenses rise by more than 1,800% or 18 times from 2015-2023. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre held a news conference yesterday saying total crime is up 50 percent, sexual assaults are up 75 percent, violent firearms offences up by 116% and extortion is up 357 %. Auto thefts are up by 46 percent, murders are up by 28% and gang related murders have increased by 78 percent. Polievre says this is the result of government’s catch and release laws and changes under Bill C-5 and C-75 that have given dangerous violent offenders access to easy bail, eliminated mandatory jail time for violent crimes, and allows dangerous violent offenders to be released back into our communities to serve their sentences at home. He says the NDP Liberal government had a secret document planning decriminalization of crack, heroin and cocaine in Canada, which he says they tried to hide until after the election. The total number of violent crimes in this province rose from 7228 in 2015, to 10,000 in 2023.
