The statement reads, “While we appreciate the passion of the NL West SPCA, we feel the video unfairly characterized the City’s position on this issue."

On Saturday September 30th  the RNC and the NL West SPCA responded to a situation of animal hoarding in a Corner Brook residence. Municipal Enforcement was asked to assist, and was able to secure a City building for the overflow of animals. The city issued a statement late Friday afternoon. The statement reads, “CAlthough the Director urged the SPCA to find a longer term location for the animals, and even offered to pay for a temporary space, the City would never see the animals left unsheltered or insist that animals in the SPCA’s care be euthanized. Our City representatives left the meeting believing they had a constructive conversation with our partner, and were dismayed to learn of the interpretation described in the video.

The City has a close working relationship with the SPCA and we are already in discussions with board members regarding a long term animal boarding arrangement in which the City would compensate the SPCA. The City has had a long history of supporting the NL West SPCA including the land, services and permits for its new shelter. Our Council looks forward to engaging the NL West SPCA board in constructive dialogue for the benefit of the City’s animals.

Animal hoarding situations are difficult for all parties involved. Everyone wants to see the best possible outcome for these animals.”
