Byrne was Immigration Minister and announced at the start of summer that $171,000 would be spent to add the Newfoundland and Labrador logo on the UK sports team jerseys, a move that angered the opposition and Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce.

Keyin College has entered into a $300,000 partnership with soccer team Barrow AFC to be their sleeve sponsor on team jerseys. They will also be bringing their players and coaches to this province to help kids grow through soccer through camps. Corner Brook MHA and then Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne announced at the start of summer that $171,000 would be spent to add the Newfoundland and Labrador logo on the UK sports team jerseys, a move that angered the opposition and Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce. Byrne says maybe now, they can understand communications, new ideas,  and technology. He also announced in June that this investment would project NL to the world in an amazing way while benefiting from healthier living and competitive athletics. $50,000 of the funding will go towards the Canada Games next year.
