Corner Brook's historic Glynmill Inn celebrating 100 years

The hotel remains one of Corner Brook's most recognizable buildings to this day and played a role in the early developments of the city.

An iconic Corner Brook building that predates the city and Newfoundland's confederation to Canada is turning 100 this year, and the owners are throwing a party.

The Glynmill Inn, originally built as living quarters for senior staff overseeing the construction of the Corner Brook pulp and paper mill, was officially opened as a hotel on June 30, 1924.

The building, which is inspired by Tudor-style architecture, was designed by Andrew Cobb in the early 1920s for the Armstrong-Whitworth Company of England, the company behind what is today Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Ltd. It was named after the chairman of the company of the time, Sir Glyn West, who was also there for the official opening.

Steele Hotels is the present day owner of the hotel and are planning centennial celebrations throughout the year to celebrate the people, stories, and legacy of the establishment. Though the building is best known as a hotel, it also shares a pivotal role in the area's radio history. VOWN, Voice of West Newfoundland, was Corner Brook's first radio station and had its beginnings on the top floor of the Glynmill Inn. It signed on the air in 1943 during a public ceremony attended by about 200 guests in the ballroom of the hotel. Following confederation in 1949, that station became CBY, better known as CBC Radio One. History came full circle in 2017 when CFCB and K-Rock moved into the Glynmill Inn, followed by BayFM in 2023 after the closure of those stations. This means each radio station to ever exist in Corner Brook has at one point or another operated out of the historic building.
