Chelsea Canning of the Journey Project says while many types of violence are decreasing, stats are showing sexual violence is increasing. Canning was the guest on Bayfm’s the Plain Truth with host Paula Sheppard. She says sexual violence is actually a non-legal term while sexual assault has its’ own section in  the Criminal Code of Canada. Canning says only 5-6 percent of actual sexual assault are being reported which makes it difficult to understand the data completely.  She says about 30 percent of women over the age of 15 will experience sexual assault  at some point in their lives.
