When dead salmon show up for no reason it causes concern for the Atlantic Salmon Federation. Last weekend, more than a dozen floating salmon were found at Northeastern River in Placentia Bay. The ASF’s Don Ivany says from time to time , they do see a dead fish and it’s hard to know how that fish died. Ivany remembers the last time there were this many dead fish. “A few years ago in Labrador fish were trying to get over a falls with low water levels and there were some dead fish as a result,” he says. “We don’t see it happen often but it does happen.” Ivany says DFO has environmental protocols in place to restrict angling when the temperature hits a certain mark. “When warm water conditions happen DFO will close or restrict to only early morning angling only,” he says. “When water temperatures go over 20 degrees for 3 consecutive days they enact these protocols.”
