After opening the doors for over 18,000 straight days, today they will lock up for the last time.
It’s the end of an era in Mt. Moriah after nearly 50 years of business. A facebook post today states this is the last day the doors will be open at Cash and Carry after serving generations of Mt. Moraiah and Humber Arm South residents. The store was better known as “Derek’s” after the owner, Derek Allen. He started as a fisherman and worked at C-Brook Pontiac before opening the store on June 1, 1975. People started buying most of their groceries and other essentials and the store grew to become a pillar of the community. The demand for items changed, but Derek kept the store stocked with what the community needed including milk, diapers, beer, cigarettes, cough syrup, soap, dog food, stove pipes, fishing gear, nails, screws, VHS rentals, popcorn, motor oil, spark plugs, hair combs, vegetables, salt beef, lotto tickets, candy bars, wool mitts and socks, and the list goes on… if you needed it, “Derek might have it.” After opening the doors for over 18,000 straight days, today they will lock up for the last time.
