Enviro Watch NL is calling on federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan to clarify his remarks and state publicly that he supports a full and complete environmental assessment of the World Energy GH2 plan. Co-chair Tara Manuel says while speaking to reporters at the Canada-EU Summit in St. John’s last week, O’Regan appeared to dismiss the Environmental Assessment as merely “red tape.” The project would see more than 320 wind turbines more than 600 feet high built on environmentally sensitive land on the Port au Port Peninsula and Codroy Valley. Manuel says there was a public rally in favor of the plan this past weekend and there was political influence. She says MHA Scott Reid called the Mayor of Stephenville Crossing, Lisa Lucas, and asked if she would organize a rally. Earlier this month, sent the Environmental Assessment back to World Energy GH2 for more work, stating that he needed additional information on water use and water monitoring, cumulative effects, emergency and contingency plans.
