The Department of Education develops the school calendar for the K-12 public education system in consultation with NLSchools staff.
Family Day is not recognized as a holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador. However, in the past Corner Brook has chosen a civic holiday on this first Mondayt that coincides with Corner Brook Winter Carnival’s Family day in the park. Bayfm news reached out to the department of Education asking why this was changed since some students are scheduled for school today. “The Department of Education develops the school calendar for the K-12 public education system in consultation with NLSchools staff. At least two calendar options are developed that include 195 instructional days, statutory holidays, a minimum of five professional development days, and other breaks including Christmas and Easter. Depending upon the way the dates fall for the year it can sometimes be possible to schedule a holiday day during winter months, but that is not achievable every year. All NLSchools staff have the opportunity to vote on the calendar options to determine which calendar will be implemented for the following school year. The school calendar is communicated publicly prior to the beginning of the school year. Private schools are responsible for setting their own school calendars, with only the first and last day of school set by the Department of Education.”
