Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture, Minister Gerry Byrne is highlighting action and reform across all departments in 2024. Byrne was appointed as the new Minister in July after being the Immigration Minister. He says it’s the first time in half a decade there has been growth in population. In the fall sitting, the House of Assembly saw legislation to advance free enterprise in the fishery, changes to the Lands Act to shorten approval times for Crown lands applicants, amendments to the Animal Health and Protection Act to support the humane treatment of animals, and plans to establish an Atlantic Wildfire Centre in central. Byrne says one of the biggest issues is the fishery and the demand for more free enterprise. He says the west coast unit one redfish fishery is one of the greeted disappointments the federal government has ever offered this province. He says the fight isn't over to get a fair share. In November, Byrne announced a 10-point plan to advance free enterprise in the fishing sector.
