Government has released details of consultations which were held throughout the province last year about equal pay. Titled “ What We Heard”, it included the concerns of 439 individuals out of the 800 who were invited. Common themes included human resources, data infrastructure and collection requirements, and privacy considerations. This feedback will be used to create the regulations for the Pay Equity and Pay Transparency Act. This Act is not simply about same pay for same work but ensures equal pay for work of equal value, addressing the under-valuation of traditional female occupations and narrowing the gender wage gap. Statistics Canada reports that there are over 15,000 businesses throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
