A conditional offer letter from NL Health Services obtained by Petten offered a recent nursing graduate a Temporary Full-Time Unregistered Nurse I position with a base salary of $37.42 per hour leaving the graduate wondering why they would accept this offer when they can go to another province or travel nurse agency and make more.
Opposition Health shadow Barry Petten is calling on government to address the nursing recruitment issues in their backyard before heading on a worldwide tour to recruit nursing staff for our healthcare system. Petten says “For ages, we've heard the concerns raised by nurses only being offered temporary positions rather than permanent positions, while at the same time, we have travel agency nurses swooping in picking up the work with major perks." He says, “How can the Furey Liberals stand by and say that they're doing all they can to recruit nurses globally when we have nurses right here at home only being offered temporary positions?" Petten wonders what kind of message this letter and the recent travel nursing fiasco send to aspiring nurses looking for a future in our healthcare system.
