A doctor, his wife, who is also a doctor, their two children and a local MHA are heading to Uganda and Kenya this week to hold clinics to ward off jiggers These tiny sand fleas and the females burrow into feet causing a lot of pain.
Dr. Justin and Mrs. Janelle French will meet Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce down there this week. This is not the first time to make such a trip and Dr. French even has his own medical clinic there. Joyce says they are on a mission to help people by removing jiggers at several clinics, and ensuring smooth operations at the clinic.
Joyce says a lot of work has gone into the clinic which is all solar panel and a solar pump for water serving a village of upwards of 45,000 people. The group has given out upwards of 10-12,000 pairs of shoes, which are donated locally. One the jiggers are removed and they wear shoes, a yearly follow up shows these people are 80 percent jigger free. Joyce says this trip also includes visits to an orphanage of 24 kids which is sponsored by HopeNL.
