Sal Mercagliano is a former merchant mariner who has sailed for quite a number of years and worked on salvage vessels.

He later studied maritime history and policy, and for the past four years has hosted a YouTube show called “What’s Going on With Shipping.” Mercagliano says there has been an increase in accidents at sea and the MSC Baltic III is an old vessel.

There’s a lot of concern because the vessel is fully grounded in such rough seas that the ship may have suffered severe hull damage. Mercagliano says the worst case scenario is the vessel will pull apart.

Mariners know the risks and challenges around the island and its’ rugged coastline. Mercagliano says some of these accidents highlight the role of shipping which connects Newfoundland with the world.

Mercagliano says the rescue by a cormorant out of Gander during the event was epic as they managed to get all crew safely off the stranded ship.
