71-year-old Austin Deir of Mount Pearl is facing multiple charges after he was driving while impaired.

Criminal charges have been laid by Clarenville RCMP in relation to a collision that claimed the lives of two young women early this year. The RCMP held a news conference on Saturday morning announcing the charges, about 6 months after the crash took place.

On the afternoon of January 21, police responded to a head-on collision on the TCH near Arnold’s Cove. Two occupants of one of the vehicles died as a result of the collision: a 22-year-old passenger who died at the scene and a 22-year-old driver who died a week later in hospital.

As a result of the police investigation, the driver of the other vehicle, 71-year-old Austin Deir of Mount Pearl, is charged with two counts of impaired operation causing death, and two counts of dangerous operation causing death.

Charges were sworn on July 18, 2024 and Deir is set to appear in court on September 26, 2024.
