Shelter Director Nichola Patey says a team of volunteers endured 3-16 hour shifts the holiday weekend to ensure the animals were taken out of the conditions they were living in and brought into their care.
Nichola Patey is the NL West SPCA Shelter director, and member of the board of directors. She says they removed over 30 animals from a hoarding situation on Sunday, October 1st. Patey says a team of volunteers endured 3-16 hour shifts the holiday weekend to ensure the animals were taken out of the conditions they were living in and brought into their care. She says the city only provides animal control services Monday to Friday and not during evenings or weekends. Patey says after repeated phone calls the city did send a representative. She says they met last Wednesday at city hall with the hopes of finding a solution to house the animals but was told the best thing would be to euthanize all the animals. Patey says they were also told to vacate the premises at Brook Street, which also houses the city pound. She says recently the city representative did give them a one week extension on the eviction notice and also agreed to pay one month’s rent if they could find a building to rent.
