Hughes Brook is a small north shore Bay of Islands community of about 300 residents. Yesterday, the town council issued a statement in light of social media comments surrounding a church meeting at the town hall. The church is believed to have 100K members in North America. It is often referred to as The Truth, The Way or the Two by Twos. It is also under investigation by the FBI into allegations of child sexual abuse. In a letter signed by the town council of Hughes Brook, stating “While we understand the concerns brought and absolutely put our residents first and foremost, responding from personal social media accounts is inappropriate behaviour on our part.
The letter says council operates as a whole for decision making and social media is meant for information sharing and not appropriate for Council business and decision making. Furthermore, the allegations against some members of this organization are very serious and disturbing and should be treated as such.
Meanwhile, the Town of Hughes Brook does not condone any form of abuse. The matter of the group renting the community hall, was brought to Council’s attention at the last public meeting. Council did research and spoke with individuals after the last meeting to deal with these concerns. There was no threat to the town or its residents and there are no further bookings with this organization.
