Wakeham says “The Churchill Falls MOU is a 51-year agreement with Hydro-Quebec and we have learned from our history with Quebec that long-term deals are nearly impossible to modify if circumstances change, resulting in a less beneficial deal than promised.”
The House of Assembly will reopen on January 6th in relation to the Memorandum of Understanding between Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Hydro-Québec. As a result of the public interest, this meeting is being held on an “extraordinary basis.” Proceedings will be broadcast live via the House of Assembly television channel and streamed via the House of Assembly website and social media channels (Facebook, X and YouTube). Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition, Tony Wakeham has questions leading up to the reopening of the House like why the rush? Wakeham says “The Churchill Falls MOU is a 51-year agreement with Hydro-Quebec and we have learned from our history with Quebec that long-term deals are nearly impossible to modify if circumstances change, resulting in a less beneficial deal than promised.” Furthermore, Wakeham says there seems to be more discrepancies with what Hydro Quebec is saying about the deal. He says the Public Utilities Board should also review the MOU and everyone wants the best deal possible.
