Students are calling for an overdue meeting with Premier Andrew Furey before his tenure officially ends. Last Tuesday, Furey announced he would be leaving politics once a new leader for the Liberal Party has been selected. Mary Feltham is chair of Canadian Federation of Students Newfoundland and Labrador. She says despite being in office for nearly 5 years, the Premier failed to meet with student representatives for over 600 days and has overseen continued cuts to post-secondary education funding. Feltham says for about twenty years there was a fund to Memorial University to allow a tuition freeze which was cut by this government. She says students are bearing the brunt of this while MUN hosts lavish dinner parties with fancy chocolates. Feltham says “Education is a right, not a privilege for the few who can afford it.”
