She says the Gingerbread House has been a tradition since the eighties. “In 1982 we started doing this as a means to give back to the community and help those less fortunate,” she says. “In light of the destruction of toys from the Corner Brook Fire Department Toy Drive, we kindly ask those who can to donate to the Gingerbread House and help put a smile on a child’s face Christmas morning.”
Mayor Jim Parsons says Christmas doesn’t start until you hear the Salvation Army Band and see the opening of the Gingerbread House. “Christmas for me and a lot of other people doesn’t start until I hear the Salvation Army band playing and the opening of the Gingerbread House,” he says. Last year, the Salvation Army handed out 365 hampers in this area.
