Transportation Minister says the south shore highway will be assessed for safety soon

    Minister John Abbott met with Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce this week about the poor condition of the south shore highway, especially in Lark Harbour.

    Government recently awarded close to $1.4 billion over the next 5 years for our provincial road system. Transportation Minister John Abbott says they’re spending a lot of money on bridges this year and will be twinning parts of the highway from Whitbourne heading west. The next priority will be roads that have deteriorated and have a lot of potholes. Abbott says each year the issue tenders as soon as they can. He says with a multi-year funding envelope which they didn’t have before, they can now commit to looking at roads in two years time. He met with Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce this week about the poor condition of the south shore highway, especially in Lark Harbour. The Minister has committed to having engineers assess the situation soon due to safety concerns. He says there are 10, 000 kms of provincial highways. He says a challenge right across the province is the availability of asphalt and crew, but says they are committed to getting that work done.
