The Coast Guard's Bruce English says it was the nicest day on the water since they’ve been there and weather continues to hamper salvage operations.
The Canadian Coast Guard has been on the scene of a grounded cargo ship near Lark Harbour for six weeks now.
On February 15th, the MSC Baltic III lost power and ran aground in an area known as Cedar Cove. Yesterday, media had a chance to get up close and personal with the vessel during a tour with Coast Guard officials. Bruce English says it was the nicest day on the water since they’ve been there. He says they’re working closely with the town of Lark Harbour. The ship’s owner has two contractors on site, Eastern Canada Response Corporation and T and T Salvage. English says the weather continues to be a factor and they can’t get to the ship by sea.
There are still hundreds of containers on the ship and 1.7 million litres of fuel that has yet to be removed. English says they are also keeping out of the way fish harvesters in Little Port as they get ready for the season next month. There are 17 people with the coast guard on site and English says the protection of the marine environment is their main mandate.
