Scientists can’t be everywhere, but the Nature Conservancy of Canada is once again offering a chance for people of all ages to take part in a nationwide citizen science event.
Up until August 3, participants simply photograph or record plants, birds, insects, fungi and other wildlife they spot anywhere then upload it as part of the Big Backyard BioBlitz. Development Officer Mark Frank says these observations give them a birds-eye view of what needs protection. He says over the past five years, more than 250,000 observations have been submitted representing more than 9,600 species, including globally threatened species.
The Big Backyard BioBlitz is free and open to everyone and can take place in a backyard, city park, along hiking trails, at nature reserves, or even on a patio. To register go to backyardbioblitz.ca.
