Government is increasing the one-time Fertility subsidy from $20K to $29K, a $1.8M investment from Budget 2026. This is to ease financial pressures for people considering in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Health and Community Services Minister Lela Evans says it will also help improve access to care, while work continues to establish IVF services here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Evans highlighted equality saying while there is a sperm bank in the province, there is nothing for women and eggs.
Dr. Sean Murphy is an infertility specialist and says the costs of IVF can be different for each patient. Jennifer Tibbo is an advocate for IVF here and shared some of her own lived experience. She spent between $50K to $60K over three years to have a successful pregnancy. The increase brings the total budget for the Fertility Subsidy Program to $5.8 million.
